BMW 5-series Gran Turismo · photos, packages and modifications
The 5 series BMW Gran Turismo is a 5 door hatchback series that comes with a minor raised position of seating. The main idea behind the car was to offer more room at the back for rear passengers and providing more comfort and utility compared to a saloon. The model is available with a six cylinder diesel engine, 3.0 litre petrol unit and a V8 4.4 litre petrol unit and is positioned as an alternative to the high spec flagship usual SUV luxury class however it is a bit expensive in comparison. BMW to chase the rewarding fleet market has gone a step ahead and introduced the 520d GT equipped with a diesel 4 cylinder engine from its standard range.
BMW Gran Turismo 5 series lack the elegance of its saloon competitors including the Audi A7 Sportback and the Mercedes CLS. The tail of the hatchback fails to deliver and has the height of the slightly raised one however the front end has an aim and is aggressive. The interior boast quality with its soft touch plastics and metal spread over the welcoming wide dash along with a the lovely leather. The raised seating arrangement guarantees better front visibility though the rear pillars do block the way when reversing. BMW has equipped all its models well however the best choice is the SE base model with the option of head up display and sat-nav system instead of the expensive M series Sport version which takes in rather a lot from the pocket compared to the standard model.
The performance is in no way disappointing as even an entry level model of 520d acquires 183 bhp and sprints 0-60 in 8.9 seconds, whereas the top spec model of 550i acquires 442 bhp V8 4.4 litre engine and performs the 0-60 sprint in 5.0 seconds. You can get the best performance at all levels of spending. All models also come with a 8 speed auto unit which is brilliant. The Gran Turismo feels more weighted around corners owing mostly to the raised ride and the increased weight which actually shifts on tighter turns. Of course it is not that comfortable too and feels fidgety over tiny bumps. The M version model come with larger alloy wheels and looks different though they are more uncomfortable.
With two side front and curtain airbags and an increasingly sophisticated stability and traction control system that is available in several stages mainly depending on the mode of driving your car has and a structure that is crash proof and stiff are all standards of the 5 series BMW Gran Turismo rendering it a safe car all the way through. Further options to choose from include the head up display and an adaptive cruise control signifies that you never require taking your eyes away from the road. Reliability of the model too runs on the same gear as the 7 series and 5 series and all engine bear a proven and clean track record so the model is indeed really reliable.
Though BMW would never prefer this description however to explain better, the Gran Turismo's tail opens resembling the Skoda superb's, you can either push a button to open the whole thing or only the saloon part. The boot with the rear seat in place it provides 440 litres of boot space which is 80 litres lesser than the saloon of 5 series however with them folded the space expands to 1,700 litres of space which is 30 litres plus the boot space of the 5 series Touring estate. Having said that it is essential to know that the boot space is not exactly flat all the way through and has a divider in between the rear seats and the load area to avoid any kind of smells of coming into the cabin. The spacing in the rear seat area is inspiring as you are also allowed to order individual chairs that slide and recline.
