From 1987 to 1992 a Ferrari model was produced by Ferrari as the successor to the model Ferrari 288 GTO with the features of rear-wheel drive, a mid-engine and two-door coupe sports, namely as the Ferrari model F40. This model was treated as the most expensive, fastest and most powerful one at that time, which was sold by Ferrari to the public.
In order to compete against the Porsche 959 model of FIA Group B, the development of evolution model of 288 GTO was started by the Maranello factory in the early 1984. There was no series to campaign the model, when the Enzo Ferrari was left with five 288 GTO Evoluzione development cars because of the decision of FIA to make an end to the Group B category. At this time, Enzo wanted to leave a legacy towards the final supercar that allowed with the Evoluzione program in order to produce a car that was exclusively the road use with further developments.
When you consider about the engine feature of this model, it came from the 2.9L version of the twin IHI turbocharged of GTO as enlarged one. It was then developed V8 engine that can be capable of offering 478 PS under 110 kPa or 16 psi of boost. This power was achieved by the F40 without the catalytic converter until 1990. It got with such feature after the US regulations made with the requirement of emissions control reasons. This car was featured with the pipes, which can be able to release the central pipe guides gases from the wastage of the turbochargers and the exhausting of gases can be done by flanking exhaust pipe guides from each bank of the cylinders.
