The new BMW Z3 Roadster, which is built on the E36 platform of the 3 series, was introduced in 1996. However, as compared to the 3 series' multilink configuration, a trailing arm rear suspension, which was a detail that BMW later revised during the launch of the successor of the Z4, was the feature of this model. Throughout the 7 years of its production, manufacturers of the Z3 made several changes to its engine, which included one facelift in 2000 and the addition of new standard features such as side airbags, dynamic brake control, and traction control each year. They also changed the styling of the rear section of this model slightly by revising its tailing and the 2.2L, 2.5L and 3.0l M54 unit power plants, which they had just developed, were very beneficial to it.

In 1998, BMW introduced the M Roadster, which was a high performance Z3 model. A redesigned exhaust system , an aerodynamic body shape , new transmission and revised braking were features of the M Z3 Roadster in addition to the more powerful engines- the 3.2L units that the manufacturers borrowed from the more advanced M3 models that deliver 321 hp. Both the North American and European were the beneficiaries of this model. In 2001, the manufacturers updated the engine of the US sped models by equipping it with a 5-speed manual transmission and 3.2LHP S54 unit, which is powerful. After producing it in approximately 15, 000 units, the manufacturers discontinued the BMW Z3 Roadster in 2002.
