In order to replace the Saxo model, the premium sports version of the C2 base model was launched in the name of Citroen C2 VTS, in 2003. The C2 VTS was capable of delivering the 0-60 mph sprint in 8.2 seconds, even though it was fitted with a 1.6 liter engine capable of 125-bhp. This is treated as the disappointment with the sport version of a car that is very small. Because of this reason, in the European market C2 VTS was not a popular choice among the people. In 2006, C2 was received the facelift because of the changes made in the car, compared to the exterior and it was designed by Donato Coco. The C2 was again redesigned with a revised grille and redesigned bumper to get sportier look, which helped it to get second facelift in 2008.

The Citroen C2 was designed with the intention of aging Saxo along with the C3 model. When C2 was introduced in the market, it came up with most of the efficient and new key technologies like the most important stop-start technology and SensoDrive sequential gearbox. The C2 was designed in such a way to attract more customers and hence the design was different from C3.

More than 480.000 units of C2 model were sold out since 2003 when it was launched. This model was available with multiple air shafts and rounder shapes with slight alteration from the original. The new HDi 110 engine that consumes about 4, 4 liter/100km and only 119g/km for CO2 emissions was featured in C2 model. The C2 along with the HDi 110 engine was released by carrying the Airdream label that had been given for the most ecological models of Citroen.

Citroen was released with a new HDi engine that provides up to 110 HP along with the particle filter, in May 2008. For the new C2 model, there were multiple technology and features used in order to boost the performance. The features were 1.4i 16V and 90 HP engine along with the Stop & Start system, which provided fuel economy, acoustic comfort and the best protection to the environment. Apart from that, 10 percent of the total fuel consumption can be gained in the new C2 in combined cycle because of the Stop & Start system in an efficient way.
