CITROEN DS5 · photos, packages and modifications
Launched to target the executive segment of the market, the Citroen DS5 is the third DS model to come out and competes against models such as the BMW 3 Series Touring and the Audi A4 Avant. However, the Citroen DS5 gives you a Hybrid4 that merges a 2.0-litre 163 bhp engine along a 37 bhp electric motor making it different from the competitors. The engine is used to drive the front wheels while the rear wheels are controlled by the motor. Another offering of this car is that it offers a 1.6-litre diesel with an 115 bhp and also has a non-hybrid version of 160 bhp 2.0 HDi. It also gives 200 bhp on the 1.6-litre petrol option.
Due to its hatchback and estate body, there is no other car on the road that looks like the Citroen DS5. The Family face of the car is still there with a neat integration of the double arrow badge and the grill however there a new touches such as the trim on the bonnet and the rear window is now extremely narrow. The best quality however is the cabin which has a very stylish design along with a high quality fit, finish and material. Above the driver's head, there is a pilot style centre console and a sunroof which gives a separate glass panel for the driver and the passenger. In the back, there is seating available for three people however tall adults might find headroom limited.
The DS5 engine has many different engines that range from an 115 bhp e-HDi diesel to the 200 bhp 1.6-Litre turbo petrol while there is also the flagship 200 bhp diesel-electric Hybrid4. The CO2 emission in the latter set-up is as low as 91g/km and has a punchy acceleration and is a four-wheel-drive. The ride is very firm on the 19-inch wheels even though it is slightly heavier. The 17-inch wheel is a no-cost alternative and gives a better ride and emissions performance. The 2.0-litre HDi diesel on the other hand has a 163 bhp and is very good with the latest six-speed auto gearbox which is much cheaper than the hybrid. The suspension is much firmer than you think in the models and is still comfortable as a result of the supportive seats in the car. The noise from the wind, roads and the engine is left isolated due to the excellent refinement.
The engine and the chassis have proved to be reliable while the cabin is put together very well. The DS5 has a five-star NCAP European rating and an 89 percent result of adult occupant protection and has a very good 97 percent on safety assist. When you have an accident or breakdown, there is a new etouch service that allows you to call or be located.
There is a good leg and shoulder room in the car however some tall passengers might have their heads scraping the roof. The practicality of the car depends on whether you opt for the Hybrid4 or not as the electric motors add a larger battery pack which is under the boot space resulting in reduction of space to 325 liters as compared to the 465 liters for the non hybrid versions.
