In order to replace the model the Fiat 127, the Uno designed as the model with multitude of body styles. The design was done through the ItalDesign by the head designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. This car was designed with the front suspension as an independent MacPherson and the rear with the beam axle suspension along with the coil springs and the telescopic dampers. All these things gave the car with better handling and good road stance. In 1987, there was another component added to the line-up and that was the diesel engine.

In 1989, there was a major facelift of the 1983 model introduced in the market, which was treated as the second generation Fiat Uno. There were different dimensions available with the new car including the new tail section and a new front end, which would probably provide the model with lowest drag coefficient. There were also changes made inside the car. It was done with the stalks on either side on the steering wheel by replacing the famous control pod. When you consider about the engine line-up, it came with some new additions such as the Turbo 2.0 version and a 1.4 petrol unit for efficient performance.
