In order to replace the Pony model, the Excel came out in 1989, which was treated as the part of second generation Hyundai. In order to provide company with the good and efficient management and to make name for it, this model was released first on the American market also. This model was also released in Australia. But, because of the problems occurred with the production models the sales dropped.

In many countries, this generation was popularly known as the Hyundai Lantra model. It was designed with the intention of competing with the Toyota Corolla and the Honda Civic in a reliable way. This model was capable of running on the engine of Mitsubishi 1.6 L5 along with 16 valves option, which would probably produce up to 113 hp in order to make 0 to 60 in 9.5 seconds. In order to boost the performance of the car, a 1.8 L4 bigger engine was added to this line-up with an effort.

This car was sold in the name of Hyundai Pony in some regions and as the Hyundai Elantra in a number of markets, which was also known as the X3 model. In the case of body styles, it came with three different body styles including the estate, the sedan and the hatch. The sedan model was available with two efficient engines namely as 1.3 and the 1.5 petrol. The availability of diesel engine was only started with the 2003 model. Since these engines had the common problem of low fuel efficiency, the next generation models were unable to tackle with this major issue.
