Audi for the first time in the Geneva Motor Show 1980 introduced the First generation Quattro. Quattro stands for four in Italian language. The Audi Quattro as anxious in its description featured a latest design of a four wheel drive system which instantly proved itself of being an all time competitor in rally competitions. Audi, the German automaker was in fact the pioneer of introducing an all wheel drive in rally competitions whereas it also won its first ever race which was a pure result of the company's innovative solution.

The car was made available for the masses in late 1980's and featured a 2.1 litre 5 cylinder inland SOHC 10 valve engine that delivered 200 hp. The inner and outer design of the model went several changes through the year which saw new dashboards in the 84 and 85 facelift, a sloping front grille in the 1885 model change and the 1983 and 1988 model introduction of liquid crystal display. In 1987 The Audi Quattro underwent an engine changed which was replaced by a 2.2 litre inline DOHC 5 cylinder unit. The new engine accelerated the hp to 220 and topped around 230 km/h.

Audi Quattro in terms of sports motors, was among the most successful cars. The later road car versions of Quattro were provided with the innovative fittings of the sports version including the predecessor of Direct Shift Gearbox and the Power Shift Gearbox.
