Audi A2, a five door, four to five seats hatchback, MPV styled compact supermini was produced by Audi AG starting from November 1999 to 2005. The A2 was based on the design of the AI2 concept car which was presented for the first time in the Frankfurt Motor Show held in 1997. The main features of the A2 included the aluminum construction combined with the competent engines which rendered the car as a tremendously economical fuel car.

The A2 packages that were available in the UK in various trims were the "SE" (Special Equipment), 'Standard', 'Special Edition' (2005), and 'Sport'. The Germany available packages included 'Style', 'Advance', 'High Tech' and the 'S Line' which was made available later.

A2 was the first ever economical fuel consumption five door car to be available on sale in Europe. It was produced in the Audi's Germany "Neckarsulm" aluminum plant on a specially purpose built line. The car gave average fuel consumption per 100 kilometres of even less than 3 litres. (94.2 mpg; 78.4 mpg-US). These figures however apply on the 3L diesel engine version with stop start system, narrow tires, automatic gearbox and less power. The average A2 due to its construction style weighs below 1000 kilograms (2200) lbs. The last batch of A2 left the factory in 2005 August.
